Land Information New Zealand has published the latest edition of its New Zealand Nautical Almanac. Covering 1 July 2015 to 30 June 2016, it is an authoritative source of information for safe navigation in New Zealand waters.
National Hydrographer Adam Greenland says that, through the Almanac, critical safety information is pulled together each year in the one document.
“While it is compulsory for certain vessels to carry the Almanac, I’d ask that all mariners consider getting a copy,” says Adam.
Key information in the Almanac includes astronomical information, tide predictions for ports, and information about navigation lights.
“The Almanac also contains LINZ’s Annual Notices to Mariners which cover issues like search and rescue procedures, and identifies submarine cable and pipeline protection zones, military live firing areas and shipping routes.
The Almanac is now available from chart retailers, and on the LINZ website. Information in the Nautical Almanac is updated through LINZ’s fortnightly Notice to Mariners service. Information on vessels required to carry the Almanac can be found in Maritime Rules Part 25.
